Ingredients:
White water-ground corn meal
Salt
Buttermilk
1 heaped tablespoon sugar
Hot greased cast iron skillet
Cooking Instructions:
Heat iron skillet in 350 degree oven while mixing ingredients.

Pour amount of cornmeal you wish to use in mixing bowl. Make a well and add salt, sugar and buttermilk and stir. Add enough buttermilk until you can barely form a patty (cornmeal patty should NOT be dry).

Carefully take hot skillet from oven. Form rounded pone and carefully place in skillet with sides of pones touching. Brown top on broil until begins to show some brown color. Then turn oven to bake 350 until done, usually 25 to 30 minutes
Serving Suggestions:
Split in half and heavily butter, or if preferred, skin crust from pone and butter -- enjoy.
Additional Comments:
Pones should have a thick crust all over. This is an old southwest Virginia farm recipe. Some folks don't add the sugar!
